Advanced Arabic Language, Amman

University of California Education Abroad Program (UCEAP)
Spring Semester
Amman, Jordan (Map)

Program Details

Experience the modern Middle East while becoming fluent in Arabic. In Amman, Jordan's capital, hip, young Arab professionals hurry past Bedouin tents and Roman ruins on their way to work. The labyrinthine downtown hosts coffeehouses, souks, and mosques central to Jordanian life. Jordanians are typically warm and welcoming, which helps with Arabic conversation skills. Electives include Arabic poetry, media, and introductions to Islam. In the research course, you can explore your own topic along with workshops and peer exchanges. Among a series of field trips, a favorite is a trip to the ancient city of Petra. The hand-carved metropolis etched in pink desert sandstone speaks of mysteriously lost civilizations. There is also a weeklong retreat to the rural Jordan Valley. Arabic-speaking guides will walk you through archaeological, historical, and natural wonders. During the retreat you’ll trek the red sand dunes of Wadi Rum, navigate dramatic rock formations, and visit a traditional Bedouin camp.

1. Go to MyUCR Abroad or UCEAP website website to research your program options, under the Search Programs tab.
2. Complete the First Step To Learn Abroad Session. You need to complete the Assessment (link in the video) to receive credit for the session and to receive information on the next steps of the process.
